It’s been a fairly quiet around here but it’s not because I’m lacking for things to say, it’s simply because I’ve been busy on other projects. I’ve been racking up the word count during nap time and after bedtime I’ve been deep into code and inventory and design for my friend’s brand new e-commerce website we’re getting ready to launch for her embroidery business. It’s been a lot of work but it’s going to be well worth it in the long run.
In addition to all of that, I’ve been reading, binging a new TV show, and having several great hair days. So let me tell you more about with another round of My Favorite Things.
The Mindy Project
I realize I’m probably the last person to give this show a look but without cable I’m usually behind things like this. I mean, we just got into Brooklyn 99 last month. I figured this would not be a show I could binge with Tim so when he went away for work last week I gave it a try that first night. Fast forward four episodes and I was hooked. I binged the entire first season and a few episodes of the second season by the time Tim came home Friday afternoon. Because I follow Mindy Kaling on Instagram I know one the major plot points of the show in later seasons but that doesn’t ruin it for me. In fact, the plot isn’t very original but I’m not watching for that…I’m watching for the hilarious one liners (“Why do you have a bunk bed? Are you trying to lure Marines in here to hook up with them?”) and the celebrity guest stars that keep popping up. It’s like a who’s who of mid-30’s Hollywood. It’s perfect unwinding TV.
Running: A Love Story by Jen A. Miller
I found Jen on Twitter in June 2011. I think she was part of a Twitter conversation with @ZoowithRoy, whom I also follow, and whatever she said caught my attention and I’ve been following her ever since. She freelance writes for local newspapers, magazines, in addition to papers like The New York Times. She’s from South Jersey, in fact the actual county we lived in until nine months ago, so it was kind of like finding a celebrity in my own backyard. When I heard she published a memoir I put it on my must-read list. The title is a bit deceiving because it’s not simply about running, in fact, I’m not completely sure running is the main focus of the book. I was not disappointed though because I’m not sure a book entirely about running would have interested me. What you do get is a first hand account of the major adult relationships in her life compared to the struggles she encounters as a developing runner. Her experiences are incredibly relatable from crappy boyfriends to family expectations to the desire not to make the same mistakes our parents did. It’s reassuring to know I’m not the only person who has had to deal with these thoughts and pressures. Oh, and she went from hating running to seeking out marathons. It’s inspiring.
Aussie Mega Moist Shampoo & Conditioner
My hair has been straw-like for weeks. I have insanely thick hair and the shampoo and conditioner I was using wasn’t doing anything for my hair. I found this on a Buzzfeed list for girls with thick hair (I know, I know) and decided to give it a try. This stuff is magic! My hair is soft and shiny and smells so good. You can beat it for a giant bottle with a pump for under $7 a bottle.
Tyra Glasses by GlassesUSA
Akward selfie. Is there any other kind?
I wear contacts 95% of the time but there are times, like morning and night or when my contacts are just not cooperating, that I like to pop on my glasses instead. After ten years with the same frames, it was time I needed new ones. It wasn’t because I was unhappy it was because the frames I had were literally falling off my face and disintegrating in my hands. Even when the optometrist broke my frames and glued them back together at my insistence. I don’t like to spend a ton of money on glasses because I’m cheap so I Googled “cheap eyeglasses” and found GlassesUSA. Within fifteen minutes, I had a pair of frames picked out and ordered. The total was $24 with shipping. I figured if they turned out to be a bust then I wouldn’t have wasted much money but when I got them on Saturday I was pleasantly surprised. They’re quality glasses, my prescription is perfect, and they were only $24! Now that I know about this site, I may order new glasses every time my prescription changes.
Texts Between Mom and Elizabeth
Have you seen these text messages making the rounds on Facebook? If not, drop everything you’re doing and read them. Read all of them. They’re hilarious and very reminiscent of all the things I’ve done to my own mother over the years (with the help of my sister of course).
Tell me about some of your favorite things.
