My Favorite Things {#4}

It’s Friday! Woo Hoo! I survived our first “mid-winter” school break. Is this only a New York thing? The kids had off for two weeks over Christmas, then they got this week off, and there’s another week off in April. Apparently this is standard for all the schools in the area. Geez! But if we can survive this week off while I was still beating back the plague of 2016, we can survive anything. I’m easing back into the blogging routine with another “My Favorite Things” installment. Let’s get to it.

Favorite for the home. Remember one of my goals for this year is to complete making our rental house a home. I saw a bedding set at Target a few weeks ago but held off hoping to catch it on sale during President’s Day weekend. I couldn’t find the one I saw in-store on their website (I hate when that happens) but I did stumble on this beautiful purple watercolor style set. I love, love, love this! The only downside is that it doesn’t fit the decor in our bedroom. Like at all. Our walls our a salmon color and the trim is a lighter salmon color (?). I don’t know. We certainly didn’t pick the colors but I really have no desire to paint so I need to settle for something else. I’m half-tempted to buy it anyway and hope our next home has a bedroom with white or cream colored walls.

Favorite how-to. Did you notice I’ve changed the way things look around here? I’ve been thinking about doing it for a while but my budget didn’t allow for me to pay someone to re-do it for me so I’ve been on the Google hunt for tutorials. I found this tutorial through a simple Google search and while I didn’t end up using it in my design, I did go through the steps and was happy with the results. Plus, Kaye, the author, provides you with a free gold foil download.

Favorite anticipation. It took me two tries but I finally got on board with the Outlander craze about eighteen months ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve read all eight novels and I’m tempted to go back and re-read my favorites. Starz turned the book series into a television series last year and for the most part it did not disappoint. This promotional post debuted last week and all I can say is “OH.MI.GAWD.” It looks amazing! The costumes, the colors. All of it. I think I’m more excited for the second season than I was for the first. Terry Dresbach is the show’s costume designer. If you have time, you should read her blog where she shares her thoughts and research that go into every costume. April 9th can’t come soon enough.

Favorite room. One of the things we absolutely wanted in a house was a fourth bedroom so we could have guests spend the night without putting out one of the kids and so I could have an office again. (I was evicted to the living room when Jack needed a nursery.) We’ve struggled to find a way to make the room functional for both purposes. I love this office/guest room setup. I’m always on the hunt for a much smaller desk than the monstrosity we have in their now and our guest bed is a pull out couch to save on space. I also love the shelving instead of cluttering the desk with the personal odds and ends.

Favorite soup. We’ve been really lucky with the cold this winter. We’ve had a few really cold days and a few snow days but just enough to make it feel like winter and not make me feel like I’ll never see sunshine and fifty degrees ever again. Still, those few true winter days have had me craving comfort food and soup is one of my favorite comfort foods of all time. Stick to your ribs, lick the bowl clean sort of soups. I’ve tried a lot of broccoli cheddar soups in my time but they always end up with the cream separating from the broth or being blah. I turned again to good ole Google and was rewarded with this recipe from Smitten Kitchen. The cream and the broth blended well together and it was perfectly creamy, cheesy, and simply delicious. Even my kids enjoyed it. Tim took the leftovers for lunch the next day and said it reheated perfectly in the microwave.

      Yes you must watch Outlander! If you have about six months to dedicate I suggest reading the books as well.

  2. I am going to check out that header tutorial…I have been wanting to do that, too. That outlander show looks interesting….I have been obsessing over downtown abbey and have just reached season 4 last night. Is it similar to that at all?

      If you like Downton you should enjoy Outlander. It’s very much an historical drama but with a big twist. The books are fantastic as well. Hang on with Downton too. Season 5 leaves a lot to be desired but season 6 has really turned it around.
