40 Songs That Will Inspire You to Write

Where words fail, music speaks. – Hans Christian Andersen

That Hans sure as hell knew what he was talking about. If I don’t encounter writer’s block at least once a week something is wrong. When I’m looking to break through it for a blog post I turn towards other blogs and the latest news but when I’m working on fiction I need something a little more removed from the actual act of putting words on paper. I like to write in complete silence, removed from anything that can offer me a distraction. I don’t exist as a writer in a vacuum though. I think about what I’m going to write or how I’m going to work through a plot point throughout my day. Often I find inspiration in music. Whether it be the mood it sets or the message behind the words or that it simply clears my mind, music can inspire me to do some of my best writing. I thought I shared a sampling of what I like to hear when I’m looking for inspiration.

I’ve definitely been writing more in the last year than I have in a long time but a lot of these songs have helped me work on my novel. Different songs inspire different scenes.

A very wide range of music. Love it.

  4. Couldn’t agree more on the lineup! Pink Floyd, The Who, Beastie Boys, and the songs Empire State of Mind and Little Talks are huge dance and writing inspiration to myself.
